PurposeThis knowledge builder focuses on the term 'calling in' as it relates to planning applications. In general, applications are called-in by the Secretary of State or National Assembly only if planning issues of more than local importance are involved. |
BenefitsThe key to understanding the call-in process is that it is part of the administrative machinery whereby central government in England and Wales exercise control over the development control process. Whilst anybody may request that an application be called-in, it should be noted that the procedure is not a substitute for a third party right of appeal. Nor can it be made into a device for securing a public inquiry into the application concerned. |
