Purpose

This knowledge builder considers the system of Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) which introduces a more integrated approach to controlling pollution from industrial sources. This approach is intended to improve environmental protection by introducing new measures to reduce or prevent emissions to air, land and water.

Benefits

The EU’s set of common rules in relation to permitting and controlling industrial installations are set out in the IPPC Directive of 1996, with which all EU member states - and therefore local planning authorities - are required to comply.
