PurposeThe Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 provides a framework for protecting buildings of special architectural or historic interest. It provides an additional and separate series of controls to the need for planning permission. These are examined in this action list. |
BenefitsHistoric buildings are now being recognised not only as historic assets worthy of protection but are increasingly being recognised as having important educational, cultural and tourism functions. These new roles demand that positive management of buildings is required as well as the exercise of formal regulatory controls. |
