Purpose

This action list considers the role of planning in relation to a specific group in society. It is widely acknowledged that Gypsies and Travellers are poorly served by public services and that legislative and planning policy changes in the 1990s have resulted in a virtual standstill in public sector gypsy/traveller sites. This action list is intended for local planning authorities that wish to improve the sensitivity of their service to gypsies and travellers.

Benefits

Gypsies and travellers tend to be marginal in discussions of planning and housing. It is important that officers and politicians are as well informed as they would be on any other topic - and this action planner provides that information.

Audience

Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.

Learning method

This action list focuses on the steps that can be taken with regards to planning for the group in society known as Gypsies and Travellers. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
