Purpose

This knowledge builder describes the current structural fund programme for the period 2000–2006. Structural Funds are the European Union's main financial instruments for supporting social and economic restructuring and reducing disparities between regions. Their purpose is to promote the economic, social and territorial cohesion of the Union.

Benefits

The philosophy of cohesion that underpins Structural Funds is one of the fundamental objectives of the European Union and the Funds are a powerful manifestation of a Europe-wide concept of spatial planning. The language of this philosophy filters down to the local programme level and to individual projects. An understanding of this language is therefore essential to an understanding of the resulting development proposals.

Audience

Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
