Purpose

This module examines the role of local authorities in Britain. Local authorities are key players within local governance and are responsible for a range of locally delivered public sector services including spatial planning.

Benefits

Few things can be more relevant for planning and planning professionals than the overall ‘shape’ of local government. Its structure, functions, finance and democracy largely determine the practice of land use planning within the United Kingdom.

Audience

Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.

Learning method

Central to the role of planning, this knowledge builder examines the history of the development and the changing powers of the local authority. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject.
