Purpose

Asylum is currently one of the key political and policy issues. Although the number of asylum applications in the UK is small in global terms and is currently declining, anxiety around the asylum issue is continually generated by sections of the media and in political debate.

Benefits

Two of the problems commonly associated with asylum seekers are the unplanned nature of their arrival and the lack of predictability over their movement. These factors have implications for the provision of housing and a range of other public services, typically seen in terms of a strain on local authority provision.
