Purpose

This Knowledge Builder provides an overview of the current system of development control/management in England and Wales. Development management comprises the practice of, and context for, contemporary development control activity, relating more to steering and shaping development as opposed to more traditional regulation or ‘control’.

Benefits

Development control/management is central to the implementation of spatial planning policy, and recent changes adopted and proposed for development control/management are linked to wider processes of culture change and modernisation of spatial planning.
