Purpose

This knowledge builder considers the policy relating to the conversion of agricultural buildings. The principles of sustainable development encourage the re-use of buildings. While there is a long-standing presumption against new buildings in the countryside, agriculture and forestry have had exemptions for new buildings and encouragement to diversify their economic base.

Benefits

The module demonstrates the fine balance between the two divergent policy positions of both restricting new development and encouraging the re-use of redundant buildings which the planning system needs to reconcile.

Audience

Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.

An issue of relevance to planners, developers and farmers, and the planning debate surrounding the issue is covered in some detail in this knowledge builder.
