Leading Managers to Adapt and Grow

Interview An Interview with Warren Bennis, Bloomsbury

Purpose and benefits

Warren Bennis is practically synonymous with leadership. A student and protégé of Douglas McGregor, he was invited by McGregor in 1959 to establish a department of organisation studies at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. After serving in administrative positions in the 1960s and 1970s—as provost of SUNY Buffalo and president of the University of Cincinnati—he returned to research and teaching in 1979, joining the faculty at the University of Southern California, where he continues to pursue his groundbreaking work on learning, leadership, organisational life, and personal development. Here he reflects on the factors that have most profoundly influenced this thinking, as well as on the qualities that people and organisations must nurture in order to create meaningful work.
